ESTABILISHMENT OF THE MUSEUM:

The Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, created among the ruins and ashes in newly-freed Minsk in October 1944, has been carrying out and continues to carry out its high mission of commemorating the Great Victory over fascism during the whole time of its existence.
The exhibition entitled “Byelorussia lives, Byelorussia fights, Byelorussia was and will be Soviet”, which was opened in the Moscow State Historical Museum in November 1942, laid the foundation of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War.
Resolution on establishment of a museum of the history of the Belarusian people struggle approved at the meeting of the Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (of Bolsheviks) on September 30, 1944, was taken just when liberation of the Belarusian lands began. Radiograms were sent to the partisan brigades telling about the necessity of collection and preservation of materials for the museum. In little less than a year, over 10 thousand items were collected.
The opening ceremony was held on October 22, 1944 in one of the buildings that remained intact during the war years – Trade Union House in Svobody Square in Minsk. The first Museum exposition was organised due to the enthusiastic work of former partisans P.N. Goncharov, N.S. Abramov, P.S. Lovetsky, V.M. Sikorsky, A.S. Barkhatkov, S.G. Romanov, O.V. Lutsevich, A.I. Shakhnovich, underground activists V.S. Romanovskaya and M.P. Rynkevich, pre-war museum staff member S.I. Dvorkina, teacher E.M. Zaklinskaya, student O.I. Bondar, school graduate R.V. Dovnar-Zapolskaya, and many others.
Construction of a new Museum building started with planting of a capsule by the President of the Republic of Belarus A.G. Lukashenko on April 24, 2010 during the Republican voluntary Saturday work. In the history of the Republic there have not been yet any analogues of such museum projects either in its significance or in its size.
Over 70 years that have passed from those far-off days, the Museum has become the greatest national depository of material and spiritual monuments of the 1941-1945 war history.
The area of 10 exposition halls makes up 4,200 square metres presenting over 8 thousand of exposition materials.
The Museum funds consist of 28 collections and number in 144 thousand of depository items: these are photographs, documents, letters and personal belongings of the Great Patriotic War participants – front-line soldiers, partisans and underground activists.
The Museum gathers and constantly replenishes its funds by searching, collecting and donating museum items by organisations and private individuals. Two Museum collections “Handwritten partisan journals” and “Self-made partisan weapons” have the status of historical and cultural value of the 1st category.
Today, the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War is a national heritage of our country. It became the first Museum of history of the bygone war as far back as in the troubled years of war. This Museum is a patriot, this Museum is a veteran, this Museum is the centre of the nation’s spiritual self-perfecting, institute of patriotic and civil education.
